Some believe that this marriage as recorded in the book by Anne Vestal-Miller is that of Robert stated in the obituary: The Marriage Register of Henry County, Virginia, Volume I, 1853-1878, pp. 72-73, #124, 2 Jan. 1877: R. H. Carter, 25, single, born Patrick Co., Va., son of Robt. & Rhoda Carter, married Martha A. Ingram, 22, single, born Henry Co., Va., dau. of Sam & Sarah Ingram. However, that isn't the case. There is a Robert Carter born in Patrick Co., Va., as verified in the 1850 census, but he is only 6/12ths, whereas the Robert Carter born in Henry County per the Carter Family Bible was born in 1848, and that is consistent with the obituary. Additional proof exists by checking the 1850 census for Missouri and finding Robert listed therein as age 2. However, there is a problem in that also listed are Hobson (12) and Virginia (19), so either his age is incorrect or his father's name is wrong. There is no other candidate male listed in the family that could be his father, so it's likely that the age wasn't written clearly, although it appears quite clearly as 12.
