From the book by Anne Vestal-Miller: "Marriage Records of Pittsylvania County, VA, 1767-1819", and it states that James Devin and Temperance Cox were married on 16 Feb 1811. Surety provided by John Devin (Dixon), Marr. by Rev. Thomas Boaz. The parent listed is James S. Cox. The source was a bond and minister's return. The witness was Polley Hankins (I think the clerk misspelled her name and it should be Polly).
There are several persons named Polly or nicknamed Polly who could be this witness, and it was difficult figuring out her identity. Circumstantially this Polly must be Tempy's 1st cousin, once removed. Rationale:
1) Polley, D/o John & Amy Jones Hankins, was born about 1786. This made her 25 at the time of Tempy's marriage. Though Tempy's birth date isn't known, her parents did not sign as witness. Thus, Tempy was probably at least 21 and born about 1790 or earlier. Tempy and Polley were thus about the same age and probably very close relatives.
2) Polly married a John Devin (not true, see 5 below). It's thus circumstantially strange that Tempy also married a Devin; thus, they probably married brothers or cousins.
3) The really strong part of the arguement is that Polly married on 2/21/1811, and Tempy married on 2/16/1811. This made Polly a Hankins on Tempy's wedding date, & she didn't become a Devin until the following week. She is also the only Polly of the several that could be her. The others were either too young, or they were already married and would have signed my their married names.
4) The only weak part is that the location of where Polley lived isn't known for certain, though everything seems reasonable that it was either Henry or Pittsylvania Co., VA. If that is true, then this is no longer a weakness.
5) Research by Benjamin T. Sharp, found that Polly, the D/o John Hankins above, married John Dixon, and that they both died in Prince Edward Co., Virginia. Since John Hankins and his family were living in Charlotte Co., Virginia, and they apparently lived there, it would be very unlikely that his daughter Polly would travel to Pittsylvania Co., Virginia to marry, and then move to Prince Edward Co., Virginia to live. Thus, it is unlikely that the Polley Hankins, who married James Devine, is Polly Hankins, the D/o John Hankins, the son of Capt. Daniel Hankins & Hannah Unknown.
