Both single. Oddly, they also have a marriage recorded in the NC Bond Index, that's also dated Apr. 12, 1864. This seems to be the "bond" date, and the marriage took place in Virginia, on the same day. But, then the NC Marriage Index says they were married Apr. 13, 1864 in Stokes Co., NC. This is very confusing, so I went with the earlier date, but it could be that it was illegal to establish a marriage bond in one state (NC) and marry in another (VA), thus, then performing a legal marriage in NC on Apr. 13. However, the NC Marriage entry also says "no license". Very confusing!
